It’s hard to believe we are more than halfway through 2016, but there is already a buzz on what 2017 will bring when it comes to interior design and tile trends. There seem to be many opinions on what styles will come to light and what others are set to fade – but from what we’ve seen – we like some of the 2017 tile trends that are being predicted.
WARMTH vs. COOL
While much of the current home colors have been cooler tones and mellow palettes, we will see an increase when it comes to warmer, brighter colors in 2017. Some industry experts even believe that terracotta will be a tile choice of 2017. “Unlike in the 80s, they aren’t used as border tiles. Instead, they will have a natural matte finish and be used as feature walls in bathrooms or for cladding fireplaces,” said Lauren Macer, Sisalla Interior Design. The warmth of terracotta is reminiscent of hotter climates, and therefore bring a touch of warmth and color to a room.
Light pastel colors will give way to earthy, raw-inspired stone, colors, and materials. The Nathan + Jac Design team agrees. “Metallics, metals, raw-cut quartz, Lucite, and opal will add a dash of sparkle and interest.” Utilizing a stone with color characteristics that stand out is a predicted 2017 trend.
“Warm metals like copper, brass and rose gold will continue to be on trend for autumn/winter 2016, but as we move into summer 2017, you’ll see a shift away from this super polished look. I expect you’ll see a more industrial aesthetic, with black steel and burnished metals taking over the home,” predicts Diane Cocksey, Senior Interior Decorator at Freedom. Rose gold and copper have been a popular request in the past year as an alternative to your typical silver or gold finishes – but steel and darkened metals will add a contrast that accompanies an array of room designs and interior color selections – perfect for the changes that the 2017 tile trends are bringing to interior design!
DIFFERENT TYPES OF KITCHEN TILES
Experts are predicting that subway tile will lose its momentum as people turn to other types of tile for their kitchens. Patterns, style, stone, and other choices will provide an array of design opportunities as people embrace a wider world of choice when it comes to kitchen tile. Some of the styles that are being discussed are “finger” or “kit-kat” style. Look for interesting patterns and out-of-the-box thinking.
BIGGER IS BETTER
Larger tile is making a comeback – with more and more people seeking larger tile to use in their tile projects (and not just flooring!) In addition, we’ve seen a rise in demand for patterned tile, as well as cement/encaustic tiles.
Contrasting color combinations and creative mixes of textures, finishes, and shapes will take the reigns in 2017. Bolder, brighter, more character and attitude. For those of you looking to make a change – 2017 Tile Trends are certainly allowing you the excuse!
