We’ve called Newark home for our entire life, and we want to share a little history about our town. After all, this is the area Tile Wholesalers of Newark has called home since its birth. A bustling city, filled with dining, shopping and hardworking families that call it home. Welcome!
Newark was founded in 1666 by colonists looking for a new life, and to establish a Puritan society. Its location alongside the bay and various waterways made it a key port city, especially once the railroads and the Morris Canal was built. It continued to grow, and in the late 1800’s had established itself as a booming metropolis, with leather factories and breweries.
Newark is referred to as Brick City, and has been for many years. The name is derived from the tall, brick buildings that the city erected as affordable housing for residents in the 1970’s. Today, the entire city adopts the nickname, which can also refer to the tall buildings in the downtown area of the city.
Our city has undergone many changes. Political and racially fueled demonstrations led to rioting and hard times in the 50’s and 60’s. Many people were hurt during clashes with residents and law enforcement. While Newark does battle higher crime issues, many areas of our city are safe. These areas are filled with families whose roots go back many years in our historical area. These families have businesses within our community that help fuel small business support. We are proud to contribute to our little slice (and hopefully more) of Newark through our work and support of our community. Have you ever eaten authentic Portuguese food in the area? If not, you’re in for quite the treat. Check out some of the highest rated places here.
Don’t forget that if you visit our showroom on a weekend, there may be our own homemade Portuguese treats to share. Fresh natas, anyone?
